School serves diverse roles for individuals, whether viewed with enthusiasm or skepticism. Regardless of one's perspective, the universal purpose of school is to facilitate education, even in our tech-savvy age. While online platforms provide instant information, the learning process involves individuals who acquire and share knowledge. Embracing both essentialist and existentialist perspectives, I advocate for passing on cultural knowledge and nurturing independent thinking. Traditional academic subjects such as reading, math, science, history, languages, and technology are crucial, along with courses exploring students' talents, like the arts.
As a future kindergarten teacher, I plan to engage my students through play-based learning, incorporating hands-on and independent activities to enhance their understanding. For instance, integrating educational songs from sources like Gracie's Corner or Akili and Me will not only excite the children but also reinforce learning through catchy tunes. My role will involve guiding students, providing resources, and assessing progress through periodic evaluations rather than relying solely on major tests. By fostering a love for learning and independent thinking, I aim to equip my students with the skills they need for success.
Play-based learning will be a cornerstone of my methodology, recognizing that young children often learn best through hands-on experiences and exploration. For instance, I will integrate themed play centers, such as a "grocery store" or a "doctor's office," where students can engage in imaginative play while learning essential social and cognitive skills. To address different learning styles, I'll integrate visual aids like colorful charts, diagrams, and educational videos that align with the curriculum. Interactive activities, such as art projects, science experiments, and simple math games, will further engage students in the learning process.
